Economy

Sierra Leone was slowly emerging from a long and devastating civil war (1991 – 2002) and, notwithstanding the impact of the global crisis that struck the world economy in 2008-2009, was making notable progress towards the achievement of many of the so called MDG.

MDG stands for 'Millennium Development Goals 2015', a U.N. Scheme designed to measure the socio-economic growth in the developing Countries till 2015.

This scheme considers 8 MDG:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieve Universal primary Education
  • Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
  • Reduce Child Mortality
  • Improve Maternal Health
  • Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases
  • Ensure Environmental Sustainability
  • Develop a Global Partnership for Development

The 2015 MDGs were based on the state of the world in 1990. Sierra Leone, due to the Civil War that started in 1991, went the wrong direction during the first decade, with the brutal conflict having created an immense setback to human and economic development.  On top of that, the recent Ebola outbreak is expected to have grievous social end economical effects.
